WebRecent results on the bifurcation of various types of capillary-gravity waves, including two-dimensional solitary waves at the minimum of the dispersion curve, are reviewed. A survey of various mechanisms (including the most recent ones) to explain the frequency downshift phenomenon is provided. WebCurrently active topics in water waves include the effects of viscosity, surface tension, vorticity, surface wind and bottom topography on both time-dependent and steady waves. WebThese asymmetric solitary waves have a multi-packet structure and appear via spontaneous symmetry-breaking bifurcations. We study in detail the stability properties of both symmetric and asymmetric solitary waves subject to longitudinal perturbations. Some moderate-amplitude symmetric solitary waves are found to be stable. WebWaves on the surface of water can arise from the restoring force of gravity or of surface tension, or a combination. For wavelengths longer than a couple of centimeters surface tension can be neglected, and the waves are called gravity waves. Short wavelength surface waves are calledcapillary waves.
