That's why lead pipes has been phased out a long time ago. Lead is serious stuff. You shouldn't be touching lead material without coating, either. After gently scraping off as much as possible, a soaked with solvent paper towel wrapped around/laid on top of the parially removed lead tape overnight will likely soften it enough to be removed. Some, which I suspect you have, has adhesive almost as thick as the lead. The better tape has very thin layer of adhesive. If the adhesive is as thick as the lead you will not get anywhere near as much weight for a given bulk.
